Video Production Lighting

Film lighting is one of the most important aspects of video production. Some might even say it is more important than the resolution and quality of the video itself. Why would this be the case. Well, it’s quite simple really. If the lighting is poor or inadequate for the shot, the whole production suffers. It won’t matter how good your camera equipment is, bad lighting will deteriorate the video production quality quite dramatically. most cameras will produce a poor image quality image. Or if a subject or item does not have the light focus and the viewer is confused on where to look. Either way, your image will not look good without some thinking behind the lighting design.

Let’s take look at one of the most widely used lighting technique that has been around since filming began. The standard 3-point lighting setup. This comprises of 2 lights placed in front of the subject, and 1 placed above and behind the subject. This allows for an even light in front and the light from behind creating separation from the background. This technique has been around and used widely in video production for decades.

Once you know the basics of lighting setups for actors and scenes, you can then start to play with the design by manipulating the position, intensity, direction, and color. All of these can change the look and mood of a scene.

Sometimes we cannot use artificial lights in every shot. This may be due to restrictions from the location, environment, or time constraints. However, this should not limit the direction of photography. Creating a great shot can come from the use of natural light or a combination. We can always position the subject in the best position to allow optimal lighting for the scene. We can also use reflectors and shade when filming outdoors. These are just a few techniques that can help with lighting a scene and subject.

In conclusion, you should always consider the best lighting techniques for your video production.
